Science Fiction is often said that it is a literature of change. It differs from fantasy and has its imaginary elements that are largely possible within scientifically established or scientifically postulated laws of nature. Science fiction is mostly based on writing rationally about alternative possibilities. The settings for science fiction are often diametric to known reality, but the majority of science fiction depends on a more reasonable degree of suspension of disbelief provided by possible scientific explanations to various fictional elements.
First and foremost, a fiction story needs to be entertaining. Good, or great science fiction won't make you bored because it's supposed keep you entertained with all the unbelieveable things that makes you believe that it't true. Having a hypothetical element component to the story does not make science fiction good. It is a requirement to be considered science fiction in the first place.
Another thing that good science ficion needs is a sense of wonder. It must evoke a sense of wonder that draws you into the genre, but not excessively complicated plotlines and elaborate literary style. This also relates to being entertained towards the movie, book, show, etc. A sense of wonder will make you think and try to problem solve about what you think is going to happen.
Writing is another skill that is important to have. Writing style is somewhat a matter of taste to it. Very few people have an absolute command over it. Good writing will set in motion a story instead of delaying it. Other characteristics of good writing include plot development, characterizations, technique, pacing, well-written dialogue, creativity, mood and emotion, sense of integrity, connection, predictability, and fascination, and quotient.
Also, the plot and events need to be believable. That's a tricky thing to abide by with science fiction. For example, time travel, while time travel is not possible, it is still probable. The movie Avatar, GATTACA, Time Machine are great examples of science fiction because these movies think of the unthinkable and make it so entertaining and believable.
And lastly, if you're going to make a movie or a show about science fiction, visual effects play an important part on immersion. An author should provide healthy futuristic objects and places described so that it makes you think that it is right in front of you. As you can see, all of these things relate to being entertained. Nothing is ever good enough unless you are being entertained. The storyboard and writing has to make sense in order for the audience to know what's going on. And a sense of wonder will help your audience do some critical thinking while they're still amazed by all of the events that they know is fiction but yet, they still believe.
